TANO handbags: A powerful return

In 2005, the TANO handbag website included history about the business and its owners. The owners, always members of the original founder of Tano, have made the Tano Handbag business one of the most popular handbag manufacturers in the USA. Tano bags date back to 1947. That means most of our ancestors who bought purses in the USA probably carried a Tano handbag. Isn't that an exciting thought? Now, we are such handbag addicts, it's an amusing thought to think your cousin, mom, sister, even grandmother carried a gorgeous Tano designer handbag.

Here's the excerpt taken directly from the TANO handbag website in 2005. Enjoy the read. You'll learn much about the hard work and dedication put into the manufacture and distribution of one of the most popular leather bags of our time.

Tano, now under new ownership, is making an exciting come back, and has a super-hot line that the market is a-buzz about!

COMPANY HISTORY

Tano was started in 1947 by Sebastian Giner, an artisan basket and bag maker from the Mediterranean village of Murla, Spain.

In 1960, he turned it over to his two sons, Sebastian and Peter. The company enjoyed tremendous success in the 70’s and 80’s, and was considered to be the top American handbag company for many years during that era. In 2002, Sebastian’s two sons, Steve and Seb, took over the reigns, bringing with them a bold and fresh new vision for the company. Determined to be the premier line in the mid price fashion handbag market, they’ve created one of the sharpest brand revivals ever seen in the industry! Says Seb, “This is our third season and we couldn’t have imagined such a positive explosion of our business. We’ve been selling to lots of the nation’s most exciting specialty stores, and seeing reorder business as we’ve never seen before. When you have a brand new customer base and 90% of them are either reordering in season or coming back for the new collections that’s when you know you’ve got a unique proposition that nobody in the market can match.”

THE DESIGNER

Steve is the creative force behind Tano. He has a passion for materials, an eye for shapes, and a love of hand rendered details. Three times a year, he travels to Florence, Italy to develop new styles and materials, working with the best tanneries and pattern makers in the world. On the flip side, he also has a nose for business; an MBA from NYU, fluency in Italian and Spanish, combined with 15 years of experience in wholesaling and retailing handbags within the family firm, give him a comprehensive understanding of the industry. “First and foremost, we want to make bags that are irresistible, bags that stylish women will covet but it’s not enough to make cool bags- they have to be priced right, given hand finished quality, and delivered on time.”

THE COLLECTION

Tano handbags are loaded with color and attitude. Cut from the finest Italian leather, and often embellished with handmade details, they are coveted by women with style who aren’t afraid to express themselves. This Fall, Tano nods to runway trends with lots of luxe materials and rich colors. The Metalique collection, including stylish shapes in metallic gold, silver, pewter, and blue, was on fire at the recent New York shows. The Dylan group, a young, urban look, excites with its irresistibly soft skin and hand distressed, contrast trimming. “With Dylan we took the liberty to destroy what we created in order to give the bags ‘edge.’ We used sandpaper, soap and water to get just the right attitude. Bags are best when they look lived in.” In our ever popular glazed Italian Bello leather, we offer not only a new palette (purple, moss, burnt orange, yellow leaf, expresso, and denim blue) but a wide range of new silhouettes as well, including the Spring roll tote - selected for Angela Rich’s popular “I Want, I Need, I Have To Have It” column in InStyle magazine’s January 2005 issue and the Guerrilla Tote – selected as a Lucky Magazine editor’s pick for the upcoming September 2004 issue.
